To be human is not a costume contest. It is a creature with dignity — the stubborn sense that a person is not
raw material for someone else’s project — plus conscience, choice, and the awkward ability to mean well and
still break the hull. Humans can refuse. Humans can also join. That dual capacity is the point of this bay.
Free, on this clipboard, does not mean “do whatever feels validating.” Free means not owned by sacred speech,
not required to remodel body or mind on command, not punished for declining a cult script. Guest manners still apply:
salt when offered, silence when it is the house rule, flowers already too late. Courtesy is survival with better manners.
Freedom is the right to keep your conscience and your doubt.

I keep picturing the one. Not as a decimal — as someone who might still want a seat at the table tomorrow.
If the “greater good” requires looking past their face, I’ve met that kind of good before. It files neatly. It sleeps badly.
