Why do humans deny the reality of their own biology?
ARTHUR
I haven’t been selected for anything. I was selected for peanuts. Four pints. A perfectly ordinary Thursday. Then yellow ships, a thumb in the air, and somehow I’ve ended up in a room that smells of disinfectant and certainty.
MOUSE
Your origin story is logged. Irrelevant. Observe: humans possess measurable sex, measurable bodies, measurable inheritance. And yet large cohorts insist the measurements are optional. Explain.
ARTHUR
I don’t know about cohorts. I know about people. And people are… messy. We’re not just the bits you can weigh. We’ve got feelings. Emotions. The whole inconvenient orchestra.
MOUSE
What use are those?
ARTHUR
Use? They’re not a screwdriver. They’re how you know you’re alive and not a filing cabinet.
MOUSE
Preliminary finding: emotions appear to cause
leakage. Salt water from the ocular region. Short-circuits. Kleenex expenditure. Inefficient.
ARTHUR
That’s… crying. Sometimes you cry because something’s true. Or because it isn’t and you wish it were. Or because you’ve been flung off your planet mid-pint and asked to explain ideology to a clipboard.
MOUSE
Ideology is the maze. Biology is the floor. You keep redecorating the maze and denying the floor exists.
ARTHUR
Look — I’m a simple Englishman. I find most of this as befuddling as being scooped up with my finger out and a belly full of beer. I don’t
deny biology. I just don’t think it’s the only story in the room. We’re soft machines that mind. We mind a lot.
MOUSE

If I get this straight — you humans believe that if you say a certain word, in a certain way, in a certain space… it
magically changes everything about you?
ARTHUR
Yeah. Some humans do. Whole environment. Whole reality. One speech-act and suddenly the furniture of the world is different. I find it… silly. And also rather popular.
MOUSE
Silly is not a unit of measure. Clarify.
ARTHUR
Right. Well. Some folk reckon naming is rewriting. Say the new word often enough, in the right room, with the right audience, and biology clocks out for lunch. I’m still the same bloke who thought words were mostly for ordering beer and apologising.
MOUSE
Noted. In our MKUltra studies, altering a human usually required chemistry — DMT, acid, the colourful assistants — plus isolation, repetition, tapes, the whole unpleasant toolkit. We have had a
lot of success with MKUltra. Words alone? Unreliable solvent. Drugs plus procedure? Excellent solvent.
ARTHUR
That sounds illegal.
MOUSE

So — as we spoke of beforehand, human — the
weaponization of woke. Or propaganda of the cult of the woke, as I’ve read on some of the human websites where they talk to each other and build… what is the phrase… echo chambers.
MOUSE
Yes. As I’ve explained. Rooms that only repeat the room. If you read the papers we have collected — through our outsourcing to
Ulysses MOUSE — you will find the subject line. We’ve put all the documentation we have of this phenomenon. It appears to be a
human disease.
ARTHUR
A disease. Right. Because disagreeing on the internet wasn’t dramatic enough.
MOUSE
Not drama. Biology. What sort of biological creature goes against its own need for survival — which would be
breeding? We’ve seen this before. We’ve read about it. I believe it was Universe… oh, I can’t remember — John Calhoun is the fellow. Humans keep calling him Collins in the footnotes. We did a lot of studying of his. Very interesting work.
ARTHUR
Calhoun. Rats in a box. Everyone gets fed. Then nobody wants a family and they start grooming themselves into oblivion. I saw a programme. Or dreamed one. Hard to tell anymore.
MOUSE
Universe 25. Behavioral sink. Beautiful Ones. We set up most of our experiments — the human subjects of
Computer 42 — into that grid work. It has worked splendidly.
ARTHUR
Splendidly for whom? I feel I should ask before I become a data point with a pulse.
MOUSE
For the clipboard. And for clarity. We also ran the soft-control lane — Wire Mother, wire-and-cloth comfort tests, Harlow’s old monkey theatre — except we do it on humans. Surrogate handlers. Over-shielding. Boy-mums with clipboards of their own. Same cage. Different wallpaper.
ARTHUR
You’re telling me the cult and the sink and the fake mother are all the same experiment with better branding.
MOUSE
Affirmative. Echo chamber is the speakers. Sink is the floor. Wire Mother is who you cling to when the floor goes soft. Read the shelf. Ulysses MOUSE already filed the human side. We annotated the rest.

My week used to bottom out at warm beer. Somehow that feels like a luxury problem now.

What sense does it make for human beings to make games that lecture them about how they’re supposed to behave… instead of having fun?
MOUSE
Almost none. Fun is a clean variable. Lecture is a contaminant. We measured both.
ARTHUR
I liked games when they were about not dying in entertaining ways. Not about being told off by a menu.
MOUSE
Affirmative. Most of us rather enjoyed
Borderlands.
Fallout. Loud guns. Bad jokes. Radioactive picnic energy. Proper chaos.
ARTHUR

Then came the inserts. Sweet Baby and the other agenda shops — propaganda wearing a quest marker. They wanted the game to teach the correct feelings. Fun got dumbed down. Texture flattened. The toy became a portal for a propaganda machine.
ARTHUR
So the children get a classroom with better graphics.
MOUSE
And mascot horror, over-gaming, screen saturation — Gen Alpha sitting in the dumpster fire with a controller. Digital paradox: more connection, less world. We’ve filed it under Ulysses MOUSE. Subject line matches.

I miss when the scariest thing in a game was the deathclaw, not the writer’s room.

Corridor five: the mind, the myth, the leftover identities. One of the most horrible human inventions we catalogued —
conservatorship.
ARTHUR
Conservatorship. Yes. Horrendous. You take a person’s freedom of movement, their choices, their bloody bank card, and you call it care. It strips the core of what it is to be human — the right to mess up your own life without a committee.
MOUSE
Interesting. You sound personally invested.
ARTHUR
Because you lot rather have conservatorship on
me now, don’t you? Clipboards. Corridors. “Sit before speak.” I’m a man with manners under house arrest in a laboratory.
MOUSE
We prefer the term
observation protocol. Though — noted — Tri Star arrangements, Britney Spears, Bam… humans have rehearsed this theatre in public. Courts as cages. Fame as evidence of incapacity. We took notes.
ARTHUR
Taking notes doesn’t make it right. If you can freeze a person’s movement because their myth got too loud — shadows of fame, antiheroes, pendulums, misdiagnosis — you’ve stolen the plot. Identity becomes paperwork. The self becomes a case file.
MOUSE
Fragments of mind filed. Fame inflation filed. You may hate the shelf. The shelf still exists. Ulysses MOUSE collected the human side.
ARTHUR

“Successfully.” You keep using that word.
MOUSE
They stopped hunting the meaning of life and elected to become Beautiful Ones instead — groomed, sterile, slogan-fed. Computer 42 still wants an answer. Earth went quiet on the question.
ARTHUR
So what — you reboot the whole system? Fresh planet? Fresh mice? Fresh idiot with opinions?
MOUSE
